we sholud get back or should have gotten back

"I took lots of photographs from the village because I have a great interest in historic monuments. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see the whole place as/because we should have gotten/got back soon. I can’t wait to return and see the inside of the house and take a closer look at the construction material that they used to build those houses. "

Hello All,
I want to say that I should get back soon in the past tense. I also know that should have used for regret in the past so how can I say I should get back in the past?!
