We prefer a space on either side of an em dash.

Hi teachers,

http://styleguide.yahoo.com/editing/punctuate-proficiently/dashes-and

A space before and after an em dash is optional as long as the use is consistent within a site or other set of webpages. For Web copy, we prefer a space on either side of an em dash. However, do not use a space on one side of a dash without using a space on the other (unless you are indicating a break in a sentence).

What does the second sentence mean?

1. Georgina decided to obey her father—not that she had a choice in the matter.
2. Georgina decided to obey her father —not that she had a choice in the matter.
3. Georgina decided to obey her father— not that she had a choice in the matter.

Are #2 and #3 correct, and is #1 wrong?

In that sentence, yes, either means both. Personally, I think it’s better to use both when you mean both!
