We plan/are planning to visit...

Howdy!

Would you rather say:

1. We plan to visit New York next year.

OR

2. We're planning to visit New York next year.

Which one is correct and why? The answer key in the book says that the first one is right but I have no idea why.

Yeah, just as I thought... I'm wondering though why the Cambridge book I'm using does not say that both sentences are OK. Do you think it might have something to do with the fact that the trip is gonna take place next year ? Maybe We are planning... is more connected with closer future plans?

Perhaps. It's impossible for me to know for sure. Besides, I'm not sure everybody on these forums agrees with me.

Both sentences are correct. They both refer to next year.

We plan to visit - for me seems more certain as though it were on some itinerary of the visit.

We are planning - for me seems as though this is something "we" are currently discussing and have not yet finalised the details.

I am not sure everyone would agree but that is how these phrases seem to me.
