Grammar

We never ask [for] directions there

A: Do you have any idea where we are?
B: I think we're lost. Let's ask somebody. There's a man over there.
A: Why don't you ask him directions? You're a girl.
B: What's wrong with you guys? Why can't you ask directions?
A: You know we're from Mars. We never ask for directions there.
B: Whatever.

I'd like to know why "ask for" is used, not "ask."
Thank you in advance for your help.
