We light up the football.....

"We light up the football" is the official slogan of Gazprom* for the Champions League**.

*Gazprom is a Russian gas company

*Champions League is the European football/soccer tournament

My question is this:

Why is "We light up the football" and not just "We light up football"? In other words, what's the point of using the article "the" before "football"?

Thank you.
