We laid/lay on the grass and looked at / up to the stars.

Hello.

Recently I have seen the following sentence:

We laid on the grass and looked at the stars.

And I have two questions:

1) I think that 'laid' is incorrect and we should say 'lay' instead. Am I right?
Here more details: https://www.grammarly.com/ blog/lay-lie/
2) Is 'at' correct? Can we replace it with 'up at' or 'to' or 'up to'?
