We haven't put up Santa's Village yet...

Jen: How can South Boston compete with the ladies that lunch in Hartford? How can their mall

compete with other luxutious malls that rich ladies go to?

Especialy when our working class has been hit so hard?

I need something that makes South Boston Mall a destination for holiday shopping.

Something that inspires people to come to the mall from all over the city. Maybe even the suburbs.

(Next she sees the holiday sale has started already) Isn't a little early for that? We haven't even put up
Santa's Village (What is that exactly? Google's getting me nowhere) yet.

Hi Your first sentence is fine (although it's 'luxurious' - but that's probably a typo) Santa's village is a display in a shopping mall that shows Santa preparing for Christmas - he is gathering his elves together to make toys; maybe he is talking to children to find out what they want for Christmas; and so on In the UK, it may be called Santa's workshop or Santa's grotto Traditionally, the winter sales are the sales of goods that have not been sold during the Christmas period - they used to start after Christmas. Some shops bring this forward but, as your speaker says, that is a little early Regards, Dave

South Boston is the working class area of Boston. This is an area that rich people and people from the affluent suburbs would avoid. This seems to be the theme of this book. Jen is from South Boston and is very ambitious and feels that being from South Boston is a handicap as she tries to advance in her career.

Every mall in the US puts up a Santa's Village at Christmastime, a recreat
