How can 'work shifts' be used correctly in the following examples:

1.We had to work shifts to get this done
2.We had to work in shifts to get this done
3.We had to work shifts getting this done
4.We had to work in shifts getting this done

Thanks! Is "getting" in 'We had to work in shifts getting this done' out of place? It's seems to me like it is but I'm not so sure.
