We had to hurry or we'll be late

Hello, I am studying English, and in my English book, a sentence reads, "we had to hurry or we'll be late." I don't understand why "had" is used instead of "have?" It makes sense to me that it should be in the present tense. please help, thank you.

I agree with you. It is an editor's mistake. It should read 'have to'.

Thank you for your reply. is it a typo? Because this is a book for the TOEFL test, and it is a famous one so it shouldnt be a typo.

Hi,

Or you could say -

"we had to hurry or we'd be late."

"we had to hurry or we'd've been late." (ie we would have been)

Yes, there are typos in most book if not all books. And I doubt there are any 'famous' TOEFL books-- certainly none that are venerable. Test preparation texts are cranked out very rapidly to accommodate changes in the tests and provide new model tests.
