We had a number of latecomers already.

Unfortunately our class missed it for this term as we had a number of latecomers already.

A sentence adverb requires a comma after it. I can't make sense of the sentence. I don't see how latecomers can cause a class to miss anything or how you can have had latecomers already without there having been a requirement for more latecomers, or something like that.
