We gotta meet leather!

Hi,

I ran across the above in a cartoon named "Sudden Fried Chicken." The above is what Herman says to hen-pecked Hector when Hector is being beaten by the Dumblebum in a boxing game! what does "meet leather" mean to you? Thanks.

Leather sounds like "later" (sort of...)

Possibly "to match his skill in boxing". It's a bit of a stretch, but it could refer to the leather boxing gloves.

Vorpar's answer is better than mine. If the two are fighting in a boxing ring then they are most likely wearing leather gloves. To meet leather would imply leather gloves touching - like in a sparing match.
