We don't know the gender of the person

Hi teachers,
Context:
A: How many people said hello to Peter?
B: Only one.

Question:
Did only one person say hello to Peter?
Which is the answer if we don't know the gender of the person who said 'hello'? Is it this one?
Yes, it did.
If yes, why is that? Is it because we don't know the gender?

Thanks in advance.
