I think you want to say (A) "Yesterday we took such a difficult test that we couldn't finish it in two hours." Another possibility is (B) "Yesterday we found the test so difficult that we couldn't finish it in two hours." (A) states that you took a test, and the test was actually difficult. (B) assumes that your listener already knows that you took a test, and states that the test

"1" is CORRECT.

WHY?

Adjectives that describe, quantify or qualify a noun - in this case "test" - always come before the noun. 1. For one, it's not gramatically wrong, but as Khoff pointed it, "did" is a poor choice. When you "do" a test, you're usually performing tests on someone or something. It generally shows the direction of "giving" in general. When being on the "receiving" end of a test, you either take it, sit for it, have it, etc...

2. I can't see 2 being grammatically correct.

Did is strange here. There are better choices in both AmE and BrE.

Hi,

Best wishes, Clive

True. "Take test" is the most common usage in AmE.

That was very, very good. Thank you.

Whenever I encounter sentences that have the sentential structure like "we found the test so difficult," I am sure that the sentence you wrote is correct but I have this inclination to put the phrase "to be" in the sentence. Should I try to curb that inclination if I could?

We found the test (to be) so difficult.
