We are the true Miltons. The generation runs with the sons not with the daughters.

Hi

Is the yellow sentence natural? Any suggestions are welcome.

[Man to his sister over some property dispute]

We are the true Miltons. The generation runs with the sons not with the daughters.

Thanks,

Tom

I am not sure what you mean, Tom. Are you talking about genetic traits or legal inheritance?

I don't understand it either. Is it saying that the sons are part of the family but the daughters aren't? The sons keep the family name but the daughters change their names when they get married, and therefore aren't "true Miltons"? It's really not clear what it means.

Many thanks!

...and I understand the oddity of my sentence. Does it sound OK to you now?

That's better. I think I'd use 'stays' or 'descends' rather than 'runs'. JHoff may have another idea.
