—lots of behavior happens under the radar (i.e., without the benefit of careful, deliberate decision-making) and is driven by forces that were honed for a time long ago and a place far away. These natural inclinations were once adaptive, but they aren’t necessarily adaptive for the world in which we currently live. We’re exquisitely
sensitive to losses, the group, and the present.

Would you please tell me what the bold part implies?

I can't understand the relationship between losses, the group and the present.
