We

Talking about an event that hasn't happened yet. I say:

We were supposed to play basketball today, but I hurt my hand, so I need to cancel. Or

We are supposed to play basketball today, but I hurt my hand, so I need to cancel.

Are both useable and interchangeable when the event has yet to happen?

Thanks!

In my opinion are is better because you are still 'supposed to play' and you still 'need to cancel'. Even so, there are people who would use were as "the past of politeness", as if to hint that they were apologizing for the cancellation. CJ
