Way up in the first row

Zinkoff looks around the classroom, too bad if the teacher thinks he's cheating. His eye settles on Hector Binns, way up in the first row.

Hi,

i wonder why it's "way up in the first row" rather than "way down ..." What does "up" mean here? Thanks.
