Can someone explain me the use and meaning of this expression, please?

You can say :I have a long way to go before entering the university(a lot of work to do or improvement to make) You can also say: Information tecnology has come a long way in the last ten years( have advanced to an improved or more developed state) If you say that someone will go a long way ,you mean that they will be successfull.
