Vocabulary

way the hell?

I'm reading 'love story' by Erich Segal. There is this sentence.
'Not many Harvard fans had come way the hell up to Ithaca, New York...'
What does the expression 'way the hell' mean? I haven't found that in my dictionaries and on Google.
