way off base means what?

hi,
I've got a sentence read I just wanted to make sure I wasn't way off base.well, it is hard to find out meanings as such words or phrases in the dictionary,(I even dont know if it belongs to a phrase or idiom),offten what you get is nothing.
could someone tell me what the meanings of way off base is?

Hi,

I imagine this comes from the sport of baseball.

Here's the picture.

A player is standing on what is called 'a base'. If he leaves ('gets off') the base, the other team can cause him to be 'out' (meaning, roughly, he loses).

Thus, if you are 'off base', it means that you are not where you are supposed to be.
