Way of solving

Hi,

"This exercise calls for a different way of solving."

"This exercise calls for a different way of solving it."

Are both possible or only the second one?

Thank you.

Neither seems natural to me. I think it's because we don't 'solve' an exercise. We solve a problem.

I suggest

"Doing this exercise calls for a different approach."
