wax

"If you fall over or pass out, remember your skirt or dress may ride up," the magazine says. "You could show off more than you intended -- for all our sakes, please make sure you're wearing nice pants and that you've recently had a wax."

I don't understand what the underlined means.

Any help?

In this context, the women are advised to shave their legs or remove the hairs so that the legs look really smooth as if they have been waxed.

So this is a sort of euphemism, isn't it?

I've understood.

No, not a euphamism. Some women use melted wax and then strip it off, pulling the hair with it.

I mentioned "a sort of" euphemism.

It's beause the expression doesn't have any direct words such as "hair" or "leg."

Even though some women do use waxes for the purpose of pulling out unwanted body hair,

others don't. And the very expression "to have had a wax" doesn't make sense to them?

If it does, then I think the expression is a sort of euphemism.

Hi,

Hmm. I mentioned that this is a delicate matter. It's not referring to a person's legs.

Legs (or any other part of the body) may be waxed; but as has been said, the reference here is to parts that were not previously on view:

1. "...remember your skirt or dress may ride up..."

It's up to us to decide what those parts might be.

I'd agree that "to have a wax" isn't a euphemism; you tend not to use the phrase if wax isn't part of the process. In some wa
