Waters

Hi,

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it.

The fact that 'water' is in the plural seems to suggest that it is here used in the sense of "a large area of water, especially an ocean that is near or belongs to a particular country", according to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, but I think it's a bit odd.

What do you make of the use of 'many waters'?

Thanks in advance

I think it's plural because it refers to a multitude of difficulties, if I understand it correctly. 'Still waters run deep' also refers to people, hence the plural waters.
