I confess that more than once I've ended up saying "Well, that's water over the bridge" or "That's water under the dam." They make no sense, of course, but most people are willing to...uh... go with the flow 15
I see water over the bridge as the bridge submerged in water and therefore one cannot cross it and reach the other side meet the person on the other side. Same as burnt bridges over and done.
