I KNOW what Watchmen is about and there's no way to tell from this trailer.
I thought it was a terrible teaser instead of selling what's unique about this project, they're saying "Look, superheroes and explosions, just like every piece of **** you've seen for the last five years!"

Let's hope the next one is better. And the movie is, too.

WATCHMEN takes place in an alternate history 1980's where superheroes really exist, something that has changed the course of history in some major ways (the Viet Nam War is won in a week, Nixon is still president, cars run on electricity, etc.) Unfortunately, the Cold War is still going on and tensions continue to escalate with Russia. The story opens with the murder of The Comedian, a founding member of the long defunct "costumed adventurer" group The Watchmen, whose death is investigated by his former team-mate Rorschach. Through the course of his investigation Rorschach gradually reconnects with the other Watchmen - Night-Owl, Silk Spectre, Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias - and together they uncover a conspiracy... the less of which I say about the better.

"Watchmen" just completely changed the face of comics. If you talk to some of the older comic book professionals they'll tell you that one of the things they found interesting about working in the field that comics was a medium that had yet to have its masterpiece, it's "Moby " or "Citizen Kane". Many of them hoped that it they might be the ones to write that masterpiece. And then Alan Moore came along with "Watchmen" and dashed all their hopes. (As much as "Watchmen" is praised for its originality, Moore is the first to own up the fact that it owes a big chunk of its plot to an old "Outer Limits" episode called "The Architects of Fear.")

To this day it's the only comic book ever to win a Hugo Award and the only "graphic novel" to appear on Time Magazine's list of "100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present". It just completely turned the industry on its head and set the bar for writers higher than it had ever been. I've always loathed the term "graphic novel", since most of them don't have the structure or complexity of a novel, but "Watchmen" was the first work that could accurately called one. It's just a terrific Science Fiction story.
On the down side, "Watchmen" started a process where superheroes were just deconstructed to death. Suddenly superhero comics became very dark and cynical, but without the depth and intelligence Moore brought to the table. What's going to be interesting is seeing whether the movie has the same impact on superheroes on the big screen.
One thing is for sure is that it is not going to make Alan Moore a star in Hollywood... because he's had his name removed from the credits of this and all big screen adaptations of his work after being disappointed by FROM **** and THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN. In fact, he's even turned down the royalty checks the studios send him, asking that they just forward his share of the profits to the illustrators on the related projects. Now that's walking it like you talk it.

Well, I suppose a "graphic novel" is kind of like a ready-made story board and could be filmed as is, but I hope Mr. Moore is rich enough to blythely turn down royalty checks like that. I'm sure there's a principle involved, but principle doesn't pay the rent or heat the house on a cold winter day.
If it comes to my area maybe I'll galvanize myself into going to see it. That'll make up for refusing to see The Dark Knight.

I still haven't seen his adaptation of Frank Miller's 300 (for reasons that elude me) but I thought Snyder's remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD was a pleasant surprise. I think the real trick is going to be condensing WATCHMEN's dense plot into a two and a half hour movie. Personally, I would have liked to have seen it done as a mini-series for cable, but who knows? He might just pull it off.
