'Watch' and 'its nominal subject'

Hello, I would like to know the meaning of WATCH in this sentence:
' ... because it would watch the keyboard player rise from the pit, so to speak, flex his muscles vis-à-vis the large ensemble and then ...disappear, would effectively deal with more than its nominal subject.'
I know the writting it's a little obscure.

Thanks in advance, An.
