Watch a photograph

Hi there. It is a mail to my sister. Does this sound ok?

We have scrutinized your photographs with much interest.

What would be an appropriate substitute to "scrutinize"? Does "to watch" fit here? Is there a collocative construction while conveying "I have looked over whatever you sent to me"? Thank you so much in advance.

Top answer

You cannot 'watch' a photograph, since it is not in motion. You could 'scrutinize' a photograph if you were a photography contest judge or a detective. And they both do that 'with much interest', which is far too formal a phrase to use to your sister.

It is sometimes difficult to know when a non-native speaker is joking. 'Scrutinize' remains the wrong word choice here.

But "examine" is not quite as odd.

We examined all the photos.
It means to carefully analyze every detail and try to read something more into them. Where was she? Who was she with and why? What was she wearing
