Was/were usage

"I just wanted to make sure someone other than the shoe salesmen (and women) was reading."

Should "was" be "were" in this sentence?

"Someone" is singular but it refers to a plural.

Top answer

'Someone' is indeed singular, and does not seem to refer to anyone plural either here or by its nature; singular verb 'was' is correct. ' is an adjective modifier of 'someone'.
