Was/Were

Hi all,

Can I say 'Everyone in the Bus was shocked" (or) 'Everyone in the Bus were shocked". Is it Everyone refers singular (or) plural. I am confused.

Please which one is correct?

Is it Everyone refers singular (or) plural. I am confused.
Everyone is a singular pronoun and thus requires singular verbs.

Can I say 'Everyone in the Bus was shocked" (or) 'Everyone in the Bus were shocked".
So, say: "Everyone in the bus was shocked."

May I add just a little note to the excellent answers that you have received? Here in the United States, many people would be more comfortable with "Everyone on the bus was shocked."
