Was/were

Hi, hoping someone can help with a query.
Mrs field's class was hoping they could see it.
or
Mrs field's class were hoping they could see it.
After correcting my classes answers, i finally referred to the answer sheet and found that i had apparently made a mistake.
As i am anonymous i don't mind saying that i thought it was the latter answer.

Both answers are possible, but the 2nd is the better one since 'hope' is a human emotion, bringing to the fore the multiple membership of the single class. Compare: The class was very quiet while the teacher was speaking. The class were doing their homework.

The class was very quiet while the teacher was speaking.
The class were doing their homework. (NOT '..was doing its homework'!)
