Was/were

Hello

Would you please answer this question for me. It may seem silly, but it's driving me insane.

I am trying to write a sentence, and which is correct..

"I was in the amazon jungle, saw a wild dog, it smelled really bad, and there were all sorts of insects on its fur"

Is the 'were' correct here??

Thanks in advance. xx

"I was in the Amazon jungle where I
