Much + was because much is singular (and so is food). You can't have two articles (a, the) simultaneously before any noun (dinner)!

I'm sure it was a typo by the original poster...

Much of the food was/were wasted at the dinner last night.

So Cool breeze, do you say that : "Much of the food was wasted at the dinner last night." is the right way to say that?

But I have one comment that the quantifier (much) cannot be used in an affirmative sentence so this sentence must be written like this:

Most of the food was wasted at dinner last night.

Yes, and there's nothing wrong with using much in affirmative sentences.

Thanks a lot.

It is a typo alright. 'at the dinner', not 'a the dinner'.
