Wasn't Being careful vs was not careful

The context:
My son fell over and bumped his head in nursery. Which one is correct from his perspective when I ask him why he fell in the nursery.
I was not careful daddy
Or
I was not being careful daddy.
Please explain the use of "being" in the context.
