(was/is) not the right fit for me

I have made up the sentences below.

(1a) After I went to the job interview yesterday, I realized that the job was not the right fit for me.

(1b) After I went to the job interview yesterday, I realized that the job is not the right fit for me.

(2a) After going to the job interview yesterday, I realized that the job was not the right fit for me.

(2b) After going to the job interview yesterday, I realized that the job is not the right fit for me.

Some of my non-native English speaking friends think "was" is correct in both (1) and (2) because it matches the past time of the interview. My other friends think "is" is correct in both. The reason is that the interview took place only one day ago. They don't think the one day or even one week after that will change your opinion about the job not being the right fit for you. I am not who is correct. Please give me your answer. Thank you very much.

Speakers of English are usually much more likely to match tenses than to engage in long and detailed reasoning about when exactly each situation in the sentence takes place, so most of that discussion at the end of your post is mostly irrelevant. Just use 1a and 2a because of 'yesterday', and be done with it. And if you use 1b and 2b, it won't be the end of the world.

  • They are not wrong either.
