Was,is

Hi,

I had scheduled a conference call with my american colleague in the afternoon & sent the invitation

to her in the morning to attend the call.

She replied immediately saying,

"I wasn’t sure if I should waste any time on the call today or not?"

Her intention was, call wouldn't be necessary as there was nothing much to discuss.

Why was is used in this context? I was expecting am in this context.

Please clarify?

That's odd. I'm not sure - my doubts still exist. I wasn't sure - at the time I received it.

You might interpret it as "the past of politeness". It does not, however, overcome the impoliteness of saying that the call would be a waste of time.

Compare:

I was wondering if you were busy this afternoon, because I wanted to schedule a meeting.
