washed away

Hundreds of inhabitants were washed away to the river near some villages where fisher men got their fish.

It was the biggest natural diaster for the village history. Nobody had ever witnessed such great storm, including the oldest.

Are they OK?

"It was the largest natural disaster in the village's history. Nobody had ever watched sucha great storm, not even the oldest."

I prefer 'largest' to 'biggest.'
