wash down/wash off

Hello,
Can both verbs be used in: "The rain washed the new paint down/off"? Both have the same meaning and neither would surprise me. What do you think?

Yes, "wash down" is different. I am sorry, Clive. Last question. Would "The rain washed the new coat of paint away" surprise you? I think I'd go with "off".

away is not wrong, but off is much more common and natural.
