"The Old Man and the Sea" was written by Ernest Hemingway.


Since the author has passed away, can we write "was written by the late Ernest Hemingway?

Yes, but if you establish that habit, you'll always have to know which authors are still alive and which are dead before you ever make a claim of the form "written by".

You can, but we only use 'the late' if he died recently or we think our readers may wonder if he's still alive. (Hemingway died in 1961.)

We wouldn't say 'the late Charles Dickens' as it's common knowledge that he's long dead.
