Hi,

I am talking to a doctor about a problem that began about a month back. In that situation, which one of the following sentences is more appropriate.

1. I thought it was a muscle tear

Thanks,

I suppose #2 is possible in some situation of past uncertainty, but #1 is the expected.

Would it change depending on the nature of the comment, whether it be hypothetical or real/possible?

I think more a matter of past time relationships:

In mid-2003, I thought John Kerry would be elected that coming November.
In mid-2003, I thought it was a close presidential race.

Thanks folks.

I was telling my doctor, yesterday, what I thought about the problem when it appeared the first time (2 months back). Luckily for me, it turned out that those symptomps were not because of a muscle tear, but something else.

Given that info, is #2 more appropriate?

No not at all; #1. Not only is it the natural response, but the 'tear' had already happened when you first felt it.
