Was when i was?

Dear native speakers,

I want to describe the experience about my first cooking.

Can I say something like this?

' The first time that I tried to cook was when I was eight years old. I tried to use a aluminum sacucepan to deep fry some chicken, and turnes out that saucepan had been burnt a hole in its bottom. '

Could some one helps me to find out the grammer mistakes about this one, and maybe something that could improve this whole sentence.
