"To be" is a very busy irregular verb. It has many many uses, and it's various forms are so different from one another, a beginning student would never suspect they were forms of the same word. The simple sentence "I am" is in the simple present tense, and the forms of the words change accordingly as we choose singular or plural, first, second or third person.
