Agree CB. But again, this is also a subjunctive mood vs indicative scenario because when the person asked the question with " as if it were..", in his mind, he already determined that wouldn't be likely the case.

Like: If I were you, I'd drop him like a bag of trash. (

It doesn't really matter. "as if" works differently from plain "if". After "as if" you can find just about any tense that's possible in the English language.
