Was vs had been

could you please explain which of the following is grammatically correct sentence.

1. She was studying in college when I first time met her.

2. She had been studying in college when I first time met her.

Could you please explain by two example sentences how the last part of a sentence be written when using 'was studying' and 'had been studying' .

You have found my both sentences ok which has confused me further as to when to use was +ing and when had been + ing form of the verb.

1 - 'She' had begun to study and had not ended her studies at the time 'I' met her.

2 - That situation is possible in #2. It is also possible that 'she' ended her studies at, or even before' the time 'I' met her. I don't think this is very likely without more context, but it's not impossible.
