Was vs had been

Zenko and her husband decided to visit the location where his house was/had been and looked around. Following their footsteps as they walked, the ground began to cave in and treasures that had been buried underground naturally became exposed!

Can either verb be used?

Thanks.

Thanks, fivejedjon.

The house was no longer there. So I will use "had been".
