Was to have taken / was to take

Hello, may ask you to help me ?

- Minutes after Mr. Trump was to have taken to a podium on the campus of a large, diverse oublic university just west of downtown, an announcer suddenly pronounced the event was over before it had begun.

Could I rewrite the sentence as follows?

- Minutes after Mr. Trump was to take to a podium on the campus of a large, diverse oublic university just west of downtown, an announcer suddenly pronounced the event was over before it had begun.

Thank you!

The version with "was to take" is inferior in my opinion. However, because the rest of the sentence makes the sequence of events clear, we can still understand it readily enough. Typo: oublic
