"The data shows a sharp contrast from the period between 1990 and 2005 when the most common type of household in the country was that comprised of four members, also known as nuclear family."

Is the sentence correct? Why is there 'that' beteen 'was' and 'comprised'?

"Rabbits also have another purpose than that they are cute and are a welcoming creature

Is the sentence correct? Why is there 'that' beteen 'than' and 'they'?

I think that without 'that', the sentences are fine.

What do you native English speakers think?

It is an alternative construction. 'That' is a pronoun referring to 'type'.
