Was taking

When I do meds on admission (taking a drug history from a patient), lot of times I have to ring carers and relatives about the list of medications the patient was taking.
If I want to confirm or ask about whether a particular medicine the patient was taking or not before coming to the hospital:
Was he taking xyz medicine before coming to us or admission
Which tense is more appropriate in the given context?
I use past continuous.
