Can I write:

After arranging the food on the huge table, John's family sang a melodious birthday song for / to his grandfather. His grandfather blew the candles on his birthday cake and cut the cake. They enjoyed themselves very much that day. His grandfather was very surprised about that but also as happy as a lark too.
