Was Rescuing or Rescued ( Past Continous or Past Tense)????

Question : The firemen (rescue) the old woman who (be) trapped on the third floor of the burning building.

Answer 1 : The firemen was rescuing the old woman who was trapped on the third floor of the burning building.

Answer 2: The firemen rescued the old women who was trapped on the third floor of the burning building.
