Was or were with more than one subject?

Could you please tell me if I should I use was or were in the sentence below?

Some critics used to think that the behavior and the music of the band was alienating them from their fans.

Should I use were since behavior and music are two separate things or should I treat them together?

cloudpixie Should I use were since behavior and music are two separate things or should I treat them together? You have made them clearly two separate things by repeating the article; therefore use 'were'. If you wish to consider them as one, you must at least omit the second 'the'.
